The surprise island

Madeira was worth the detour.

We gave Madeira two nights that could have gone to Porto. It became one of our favourite decisions of the trip.

Madeira was supposed to be a detour. Instead, it became one of the biggest surprises of our trip.

Porto could have had the extra nights.

When we planned Portugal, staying longer in Porto was the obvious option. We chose to take a chance on Madeira instead. I am so glad we did.

In two nights, we went from Funchal’s waterfront to forest trails, rugged peaks and a viewpoint above a sea of clouds. Every stop seemed to reveal an entirely different island.

The smaller moments counted too.

The landscapes were extraordinary, but I also remember finding good vegetarian food, trying poncha and ginja, and how easily the days filled up without ever feeling repetitive.

Two nights were not enough. If we went back, I would not squeeze more into the same itinerary. I would simply stay longer.
